Manufacturing in Alberta
Manufacturing industries contribute to a large percentage of Alberta's growth and revenue.
Check out these statistics!
- Alberta is the third largest manufacturing province in Canada
- In 2006, Alberta manufacturing shipments totaled $64.4 billion
- The manufacturing industry in Alberta employs approximately 137,000 Albertans
Manufacturing matters!
The manufacturing industry's share of the Alberta Gross Domestic Product (GDP) is around 10%.
Compare this value to leading manufacturing jurisdictions from around the world where the manufacturing industry's share of GDP is in excess of 15%, and you can see that there is room for improvement, especially since manufacturing is the greatest wealth multiplier in the economy.
How does Alberta compare to the rest of Canada?
Most studies on manufacturing performance reveal that Alberta is at the top in Canada, especially in terms of manufacturing productivity and competitiveness.
However, if the oil and gas production sector is excluded, Alberta's manufacturing productivity is much lower than other major provinces. Globally, our manufacturing productivity and competitiveness lags behind many major manufacturing jurisdictions, leaving plenty of room for improvement.
In general, Albertan and Canadian manufacturers are relatively competitive when it comes to production and export growth, but less so when one looks at productivity, profitability, and investment.
