Lean Manufacturing

What we do

  1. We bring awareness and commitment to the benefits of Lean thinking.

Alberta-based companies can use our experienced personnel to help bring increased awareness of the benefits of Lean Thinking to their organization.

We apply proven methods to obtain the commitment of business owners, executives and managers for the implementation of process improvement practices and techniques to aid in improving their productivity, which in turn leads to increased competitiveness and improved profitability.

Our Strategic Manufacturing Unit (SMU) supports and promotes events at which manufacturers can learn from other practitioners and experts in both Lean Thinking and other continuous improvement practices.

These events and practices include the following:

  • Measure Up for Success

This conference provides a forum for companies to discuss the latest Lean manufacturing techniques and industry trends. Workshops and seminars by experts and other companies who implement continuous improvement practices can show you practices that you can apply to your organization.

  • Business forums and sessions, manufacturing plant tours, and technology awareness missions that showcase real-life applications of Lean techniques in Alberta.

  • Demonstrations of Innovative Manufacturing Works (IMW) that:

    • show innovation within Alberta's manufacturing industries

    • raise that industry's profile from a career perspective

    • highlight that industry's role as a leading economic contributor

  • Promotion of Lean Thinking at industry events and other venues in Alberta.

  • Development of competitive benchmark data for various industry sectors:

    • this information assists Alberta companies as they attempt to establish performance enhancement targets

    • in addition, this information gives Alberta companies the opportunity to compare their performance against the world's best

  • Development and maintenance of a website which is used as a focal point and information resource for events, training, and other process improvements that are of interest to Alberta-based companies.

  1. We aid in the implementation of Lean thinking

We deliver (directly or through other experts) a series of workshops and seminars about Lean practices, Lean techniques, and Lean processes. These sessions typically include:

  • Lean 101 - Introduction to Lean methodologies

  • Value Stream Mapping

  • 5S - Advanced Lean Applications

We employ professional Process Improvement Facilitators to facilitate or kick start the implementation of Lean principles within an organization.

These facilitators:

  • conduct free, on-site assessments of the clients' operations

  • provide clients with a recommended improvement plan or a checklist of activities (innovative ideas and business solutions) for implementing Lean principles within their organization

  • act as an information portal to other programs and services

  • for a fee, assume a project management role, working directly with the organization during the implementation of the plan, using a combination of in-house expertise and contracted-out services

  1. We mentor the development of process improvement expertise within Alberta

We encourage and mentor private sector consulting and organizational companies in order to expand the base of Process Improvement Professionals within Alberta. We do this by:

  • supporting the Society of Manufacturing Engineers (SME) Certification Process. See:

  • hosting information sessions to disseminate information about industry trends and the needs of Alberta companies

  • maintaining, and making available, a list of professionals and organizations that provides Lean services
