About Alberta
From the beginning, the story of Alberta has been tied to the remarkable wealth of the land offered by herds of buffalo, fertile soils, forests, oil, and most recently, oil sands. Albertans have approached the land with dreams and aspirations, responded to its challenges in a spirit of entrepreneurship and industry, and received ample rewards.
Today, investors and entrepreneurs from around the world are drawn to Alberta - its energy, optimism and success.
What does Alberta have to offer?
- A powerful economy. Alberta has the lowest overall taxes in Canada, low inflation, a strong resource base, a highly skilled workforce, and a receptivity to business and investment.
- Great market access. Alberta is centrally located in the growing Western Canadian market of nine million people. It has emerged as a warehousing and distribution hub for Canada and the Pacific Northwest region of the United States.
- World-class infrastructure. The Government of Alberta is committed to building our infrastructure for the benefit of communities, businesses, and all Albertans. It will invest $22 billion in public infrastructure, such as roads, schools, and hospitals, from 2008 to 2011. This is the highest commitment of its kind in Canada.
- New technologies that support business. The main sectors of Alberta’s economy are served by growing “platform technologies,” the main ones being advanced materials and nanotechnology, information and communication technologies (ICT), and life sciences (bio-industry).
- An enviable quality of life. Businesses located in Alberta will benefit from safe, welcoming communities, universal healthcare, a world-class education system and a high standard of living. Eighty-eight percent of Albertans live at or above Canada’s low-income threshold.
- A diverse population, welcoming to newcomers. Years ago, the Aboriginals of the forest and plains were joined by French and English traders and then by immigrants from the British Isles and the rest of Europe. Today China, India and the Philippines contribute the most immigrants, and today Albertans benefit from strong links all over the globe.
- A wealth of culture. Albertans spend the most money per capita of all Canadians on culture. In the broader sense of culture, Alberta has developed winning sports franchises, one of the largest malls in the world, and recreational infrastructure that connects Albertans with the land’s many natural glories.
We invite businesses from all over the globe to consider Alberta - to help us realize our possibilities and their own dreams. We invite them to share in our prosperity and invest in our province.
