Advanced Materials
Advanced materials can generally be defined as materials that involve the controlled manipulation and/or creation of materials at the molecular or atomic level. They have superior properties to conventional materials (e.g. increased hardness, durability, and elasticity), and include substances such as composites, super alloys, advanced ceramics, and nano-tubes.
The main strengths of the advanced materials industry in Alberta include its research, infrastructure base, innovative companies, and expertise in the oil, gas and heavy industry markets. Companies in Alberta’s Advanced Materials industry are involved in manufacturing (ranging from very small scale to large, mass scale production), research and development, and other activities including value-added processing, consulting, services, contract research and training.
