Alberta’s energy technology and services sector has experienced extraordinary growth in recent years which is expected to continue far into the future.

Interesting facts about Alberta’s energy technology and services:

  • Alberta produced an estimated average of 1.31 million barrels per day of crude bitumen in 2008, and is forecasting approximately 3.0 million barrels per day by 2020.
  • The Canadian Energy Research Institute estimated that $218 billion will be invested in new oil sands capacity over the next quarter century as output of bitumen increases to 4.3 million barrels per day.
  • Revenues for the sector increased modestly by 2% from 2007 to 2008 to about $18 Billion (because of a decline in drilling activity). However, the industry has doubled in size between 2000 and 2008. Sector also experienced challenges in 2009 because of low gas prices.
  • There are over 8,000 equipment and service firms employing 103,000 Albertans in 2008.
  • In 2008, exports in the sector totaled $3.5 Billion, representing an increase of approximately 27% from 2007.
  • There is currently wide discussion in Alberta pertaining to natural gas exploration and development in Alberta.
