The workplace
To promote effective workplace practices and the fair treatment of workers, the Government of Alberta has worked with Alberta industries to develop the following:
- Employment standards: By law, Alberta, Canada workplaces must strive to be fair to their employees. For example, employers must ensure that their employees are fairly and regularly paid for their work, and that suitable rest time is provided.
- Employment Insurance (EI): Employment Insurance provides temporary funding for unemployed workers while they look for new work or upgrade their work skills.
- Workplace health and safety and workers’ compensation: Employers must ensure the workplace environment is not hazardous to employees. If an accident does take place at work, employees may be eligible for Workers’ Compensation benefits.
Employees must also strive to be responsible to their employers. For example, employees are expected to show up to work on time, and to be trustworthy with the work they are given.
