Alberta Film Development Program

Effective December 15, 2006 responsibility for the Alberta Film Development Program (AFDP) migrated from the former Ministry of Alberta Economic Development (AED), Industry and Regional Development Division to the Ministry of Tourism, Parks, Recreation and Culture.

As part of the transition, the Program has undergone a few modifications with respect to guidelines, eligibility criteria and application process. Please take the time to thoroughly read the new guidelines.

The Program is now accessible through three distinct funding streams. In essence, the AFDP will contribute between 14 and 23 percent of all eligible expenses incurred in Alberta. That's the equivalent of between a 25 and 42 percent labour tax credit. The level of contribution increases with Albertan ownership and the employment of Albertan key creative personnel. We're flexible - the details are up to you.

To determine which funding stream best fits your project:

  • Determine the level of Albertan ownership
  • Establish the number of eligible Albertan key creative personnel to be employed (writer, director, art direction, editor, DOP, composer and 2 actors in lead or supporting roles).
  • Find out where you land on the funding scale.

Where does your project fit?

Application Guidelines:

It is strongly recommended that all applicants carefully review the guidelines prior to completing their application form and preparing their submission. Definitions that are crucial to an accurate interpretation of the information requested are available in the guidelines. Copies of the guidelines, as well as the application form and submission checklist are available below.

IMPORTANT!

There are no deadlines for submission of applications; however, applications must be received prior to commencement of principal photography. Assessment, approval and funding payout will take place on a first in, first out basis.
