Sector opportunities for Alberta businesses interested in exporting their products
Brazil’s industrial and agricultural production has grown over the past decade making Brazil one of the world’s largest oil consumers.
-
Environmental equipment and services: In recent years, the government of Brazil has passed legislation forcing local manufacturers to be more responsible for environmental violations. This has increased the demand for engineering services for sewage treatment plants, waste disposal plants, pollution and emission controls, and alternative clean air technologies.
-
Information and communication technologies: Brazil has the largest telecommunications market in South America. Demand for basic services has increased since the 1998 privatization of Telebras, Brazil’s state-owned monopoly telephone system. There is a need for telephone and transmission equipment, Internet access, cellular phones and consulting services.
-
Construction and building materials and services: The Construction Industry Association predicts that Brazil will need to construct three million houses over the next 20 years. Foreign sources of financing are expected to provide 80% of this funding to meet the anticipated developments. Imports currently satisfy 30% of total demand and consist primarily of products intended for the high-end consumer bracket. The market is open to Albertan suppliers and there are very few trade barriers.
-
Oil and gas equipment and services: Expansion and privatization of Brazil’s oil and gas sector has resulted in a demand for equipment and services for seismic exploration, refineries, production platforms, and oil and gas pipelines.
-
Transportation and logistics: Brazil has sizable natural gas reserves (24 trillion cubic feet), but it is still a net importer due to a lack of natural gas transportation infrastructure. This creates opportunities for Alberta business specializing in transportation.
